Car Sale Internet Fraud

September 8th, 2008 by Rage

I have recently been looking to purchase a car, when I came across a great deal online. First I sent in an inquiry from the Kijiji website to maria28johnson@yahoo.com asking for more information about the “to good to be true” car deal she had posted. She was selling a fully loaded 2002 Honda Accord with leather in PERFECT condition for $4000. Generally these cars sell for from $7000 to $16000 depending on condition.

Please note that any language within the quotes from the e-mails of maria28johnson@yahoo.com do not reflect the views and/or opinions of myself or anyone else posting to this website.

Here is the first reply I got:

Hi,
I’m Maria, let me know if you’re still interested my car is 2002 Honda Accord, never been involved in a accident, no damage, no scratch, no rust and i can say that this car is in perfect condition and you will love this car if you will decide to move forward.
The price is not negotiable $4000 firm,I sell at this price because I just finished the divorce with my husband. When the divorce has finished I own this car. Now as a women I don’t need.
I’ve got photos of the car hosted on Internet at the following link:http://s399.photobucket.com/albums/pp74/Honda-Accord_photo/
Thanks.

So I replied to “Maria” with the following:

where is the car located?

To that question, I received this reply from the kind and friendly “Maria”:

Hi,the car is located right now in Edmonton, at the shipping company eBay, is packaged and waiting for delivery.I’m really sorry for you but we can’t meet face to face because I’m moved to my parents here in Edmonton because i just finished the divorce with my husband and i have moved to my parents for a while. You will have 10 days from the time you receive to inspect it and decide if you want to keep it or not, if by any reason, you will not be satisfied, you will return the car to shipping company with no expense.
Please reply with your complete name and shipping address in your next email and let me know if you are interested in knowing more details about this purchase so that I can open a transaction case at eBay and to move forward with this deal. After that they will contact you with all necessary information about this transaction(terms, buyer protection, payment instructions,invoice,etc.).

Thanks again!
Maria Johnson

Now I know a nice car when I see one, and this car was a GREAT DEAL.

After that reply I was feeling sad about “Maria’s” situation, and so I sent a quick note off to the wonderful “Maria.” I am not actually in Edmonton, but because of the hurt I felt for her situation, I wanted to try to make her feel happy again:

I am sorry to hear about your divorce, but as it happens I am in Edmonton and would love to go and see the car, or meet you to discuss my purchasing of it.

After a few days, I had still not received any emails, yet before, I was receiving them within minutes of sending mine. So I decided to look into the purchase of the car:

I will pay $6000 for the car, but I will send you a cheque and then you will cash it and send me back some of the money because my employer is wanting to pay for the car, but I can cheat them out of some money. Also, I will give you a bonus for the deal to go through. If you are prompt with sending me all of your banking information, I will steal your identity and then send you a box full of human feces.

If that sounds great to you, please forward me all of your details.

It sounded reasonable to me, and so I sent it off. Minutes later I received the following reply from the fair and sweet “Maria”:

fuck you nigger

I guess she got a better offer.

I want to tell you that we will use eBay in this transaction in order for both of us to be 100% protected and insured by them.eBay will supervise this transaction so there won`t be any problems. They will take care of the shipping and all the small details. You will get the car and you will have 5 days of inspection in which you can decide if you buy the car or not.If you won`t like my car(not your case)you notify eBay and you send the car back on my cost,if you want to keep it you announce eBay you send the money(payment method and all the details will be set up by eBay)and you keep the car.
eBay will send you an invoice at your email in which you will see how to start the this transaction and in which you can see that this transaction is legit. Please get back to me with your full name, full address and phone number so i can forward your details to eBay in order for you to receive the invoice. Same thing here in Southern Ontario, first a SUV last week, then my wife found a Civic this week. The SUV was from a divorce, the Civic was “senior driven” and in perfect condition. Both emails ended with “Send me your full name ad address to start the ebay process (with no further obligation)

It’s great because you can email them through kijiji with a fake return address and tell them what you really think about their scams.

  9. rose

Same deal…this time a 2005 Nissan Altima, listed in Used Victoria, the car is in Ontario, $4000 non negociable…blahblahblah, same story about divorce and eBay protection this time the name of the scammer is Isabelle_renard21@msn.com
Never thought that it could happen to me… I did not send any money, I am working on my reply….

  10. Rage

You can find these same type of posts everywhere. Generally the car is less than 5 years old and is a “steal of a deal”. They also normally have 4 pictures of the car, and no contact info.

I suggest that anyone that encounters one should send a witty email, and wait for a response.

  11. rose

Any suggestion for a witty respone?? I am so baffled by this type of behavior that I am stumped for words!!! She is still waiting for my $$ to be wired to the uk via moneygram!!!

  12. Rage

Just make up something completely crazy. I recently wrote to someone who said they were an American stationed in Spain and they would ship me their car. I asked for a mail order bride to be stuffed into a secret compartment in the vehicle, and each tire stuffed with drugs.

Sometimes you get a response, but for the most part you will hear nothing or they will say “this is serious, stop joking around and send me your info.” You can reply to that with fake info so they waste their time maybe, or ask for their info.

  13. rose

Hilarious! humor is what we need to deal with those crooks…
I came up with an email, more of a serious nature… I am waiting for “her” to contact me again and I will send it

Same here for a Toyota Supra. There is the email that i received.

    Hi there,

Thanks for being interested in buying my 1993 Toyota Supra Twin Turbo. The car have clear title and is in perfect conditions! It is e-tested/certified. Mileage: 110,900 Km, Engine – 6 Cylinder, Manual Transmission – 6 speeds , CD Changer (6 cd’s), AM/FM Stereo, Air Conditioning.
My asking price is $5,000.00. I realize that is a cheap price for such a vehicle but my special situation makes me do things that I wouldn’t do in normal circumstances. My husband has cancer and the insurance company is not going to pay for the treatment.
The car is located at the shipping’s company warehouse in Calgary, AB. It is crated in sealed container and ready for shipping. The car will be delivered to you at your home address in 2-3 days for no extra charge. I have paid for the shipping, insurance and manipulation. All registration papers are inside the car and will come along with it. If you need more pictures, please email.

Let me know if you wish to proceed by replying with your full name and full shipping address.

Some friends of mine were seemingly just taken by the same scam. The seller Sonja Russel in Vancouver has all sorts of high end toys at a steal of a price due to her divorce.Unfortunately they had already sent lots of money via western union through ebay although they dealt with her(him , it or whatever you would call a low life sack of shit)on kijiji. They are still waiting for the merchandise which sadly I dont think will show up.

  19. Rage

I figured no one would actually fall for one of these…but I guess it happens.

  20. Mr. Fanrastic

@Jo, it looks like that’s the IP of the Hotmail server, not the scammer’s computer. The only way you can get the scammer’s IP is to convince the admins at Hotmail to hand it over, but that would probably require a court order.

The only thing you can really do without a lawyer is to email abuse@microsoft.com or abuse@msn.com with the information.

    Hi,

My 2004 Toyota Sienna LE AWD is in great shape,no engine problems, damages or hidden defects. Hasn’t been involved in any accident. It was always garaged and never kept outside. I`m a single mother with 2 children because i divorced with my husband and after the divorce i own this car,i don`t need it and that`s why i`m selling it so cheap. The car has a clear title, no liens.Transmission is Automatic and has 100,227 km. The total price is $3,700 CAD including shipping and handling. The sale will be through eBay protection program for our safety. I have recently moved from Canada to Washington(US) after divorce and i took the car with me, that is why i am sending it from here. The car is still Canada registered so you will not have to pay any custom taxes.
I just need your full name and address so i can open a case.(with no further obligation to buy it or fees).

    Have a nice day!
    Lisa Lambert

  22. Rage

Hey Manny….Lisa…I will give you $6 for it, but only if you jump off a bridge first.

  23. Chris

Here’s one I came across today:

Thanks for your email ! First of all I want to tell you that I’m not
located at home,in Whitehorse,YT,where the car is.
Because of my job I have to move all the time. The price of the car is
$4,800.00 I know it may seem low, but i find it reasonable. I have
no use for the car anyway, due to my job.
I have a clean title ready to be signed. The car has no electrical or
mechanical problems. We can use eBay Safe Pay Insurer to complete the
transaction. The deal will go strictly according to eBay rules and
    policy.
In order to start the official transaction, I need to know your details:
    -full name and shipping address
As soon as I have them, I’ll start the official procedure and eBay
service will notify you about this. You’ll also receive important
guidelines and payment instructions from them . I’ll handle the
shipping, so this will be free of charge for you. We will use eBay
Safe Pay Insurer to manage the payment because it is the safest way
for both of us and also you will have 10 days to inspect the car
before I receive the money. Also, a refund policy will be included.

This is the second of these types of scams that I’ve come across on our local Kijiji. This guy has put the vehicle in Whitehorse obviously expecting that the odds are pretty slim that anyone responding lives there.

Maybe Kijiji should look at posting a warning that informs any users that their ad post tracks IP address and/or require additional info to be entered on larger ticket items? I don’t have all the answers, but there has got to be something more they can do to protect people. The reality is that many of us are smart enough to detect these scams, but there are obviously many that miss the “signs” (obvious in that these scammers wouldn’t exist if they weren’t successful).

As a side note – does anyone know what ebay does with these? If it is a scam and has gone through the ebay vehicle purchase protection process then what exactly happens?

And to Rage – excellent post and fantastic responses to Maria :)

  24. Chris

Something else I just thought of… the guy said “Because of my job I have to move all the time”. Well, duh, with the police after you I guess you would have to move all the time! :)

  25. ET

I don’t get it, if name and address is all they get from it, why do it? Identity Theft? Don’t they need a few more bits to be valuable?

  26. Rage

They start with asking a few things, then they eventually get you to send payment, and you lose much money. Another scam is where they send you a cheque for something you may be selling, the cheque generally is for more than the price you were selling for, and they say they need you to cash the cheque then write a smaller cheque and send it to someone. When the bank finally tells you that their cheque is fake, yours has already been cashed.

I generally just send them fake cheques too, or a box of human feces.

I got sucked in! Didnt send money, but sent info. So does anyone think I’ll have my credit stolen, or any thing like that or what?

  28. Rage

I would contact the credit bureau and put a flag or warning on your account so that if anyone tries to open an account or get a credit card, they will contact you. Only problem is if you try to get credit they will ask you many questions, and if you move, you must notify them so they can always contact you.

My son Just got caught in just such an automobile Scam as he wanted this immaculate car Dorothy Mills of Whitehorse was selling for her son who was going to live in Monaco. Yes Monaco and he got taken. It’s a bitter lesson for someone familiar with internet use but not about the sharks who prowl about preying on the unwary. Dorothy had no address or phone number in Whitehorse so she must have been living in a tent. Yet the photos from Photobucket showed a three car garage and a imaculate honda 1997 prelude again with the usual spiel. what fooled him was the Ebay buyer protection plan site it looked completely genuine on all counts except the requirement to pay by moneygram to the UK. I should have stopped him right there, but didn’t although alll the signs were there of Fraud writ large.
So dorothy74mills@hotmail.com last heard from transmitting from the Lakehead University in Ontario. I hope you get fershniked. “Her” ad was posted in auto Trader. We have registered this scam with the RCMP.
Where is Dudley Do Right when you need him.

Oh I forgot. A week after this all started ‘she ‘ came on the email to let my son know that her husband had had a bad fall and broke his arm at work, so she hadn’t been able to get back to him right away as she had been with her husband at the hospital.
I guess the other scam is pretending to be in the US army and moving around all the time training that has just been spotted on a website selling motorcycles particularly a Yamaha R6 the seller purports to live in Alaska but the phone number he’s calling from has a Florida area code.
    what an arse.

  31. Rage

It is a constant issue. I just email them with fake info trying to get them to email back and forth, and then, as you see in the first post, I mess with them a bit. They are on craigslist, autotrader, in news papers, and everywhere.

    Buyer Beware

  32. snydly whiplash

Agreed. I should have red flagged it when they asked to be paid by moneygram. The address in London was that of the paypal Ebay proper at Dukes Gate chiswick park. I have to blame myself even if it’s a hard lesson for my son. I should have know better. I guess the best way is to harass them when you can, wherever. We found one selling an immaculate motorcycle for $3900 USD it must have been worth in excess of $18 to $20,000 the seller was in Alaska yet the photo of the bike was with palm trees and tropical flowers one would find somewhere in Florida. So I followed the plan and sent a fake email to ask if global warming had changed the climate in Alaska recently.
They wern’t quick enough to remove a webpage that posed the lovely dorothy with her two small kids and a cat in Phoenix AZ. Now the webpage is gone.
Of cource this is after the fact.

We ran into the very same story, only the woman, if the person is a woman, goes by the name Diane Turner. She said she was selling an Audi A6 (2001). She had the ad posted on Kijiji… the rest would be taken care of by eBay etc — same story. There were lovely photos, taken from a lovely car lot somewhere. What we can’t figure out is what she really wants. We were not to send money. We offered to meet her with double the money in St. John’s (Newfoundland, presumably) where she said she was staying (pending the divorce — you get the picture). Of course, she couldn’t meet with any buyers for some reason or other (insert sob story here). She said the shipping fees had already been paid, although she obviously had no idea where the car was going. It was apparently in a container with the ownership papers, etc. She would just ship it to us. All she needed was our full name and address. What can THAT be all about? You can get a full name and address out of the phone book. Hmmm… there’s more to this than meets the eye, we think!

So it would appear the idiots who brought you classyauto now want to bring you wisemanauto.org. This is the exact same scam as the links to any classyauto complaints found here as well, with many of the same people, ex cons, scam artists, and thieves.

They are just starting out this scam in a new way into your wallet. Their website reports they have been in business since 2007. Bullshit. The website was registered on 05-Aug-2012 from someone’s mothers basement.
